This book is historical fiction. The historical aspect concerns the devastating fires that ravaged a large portion of the coast of Maine in 1947. Superimposed on this story is the fictionalized tale of a young mother who saves her two children and herself by burying them in wet sand while the fire rages above them. Although this part of the story is fictionalized, I am sure there were similar real-life stories of courage and super-human feats that took place during this tragic era of history.
