“The Island at the Center of the World” by Russell Shorto

Book Cover

The subtitle says it all: the epic story of Dutch Manhattan and the forgotten colony. Most of us in grade school learned about the English contributions to the shaping of our country’s origins, its politics, philosophy and culture. Shorto corrects this imbalance by painting a vivid picture of the even more substantive Dutch part of the picture. Fascinating people are described: Henry Hudson, Peter Minuit and Peter Stuyvesant among them. Shorto is a super writer, clear and witty, too. I learned so much from this book!
