“The Weight of Ink” by Rachel Kadish

Book Cover

The writings of an unknown, highly educated 17th century scholar are unearthed in a stately home near London, and are evaluated by a British academic and an American doctoral student. Two parallel stories are beautifully told: the first about the relationship between the two scholars studying the documents, the second about the tortuous life of the original writer, who fought for the right to study in a world of taboo and stricture. Both stories describe love, loss, desperation and redemption.

Evaluation: 4 out of 5
