“Beneath a Scarlet Sky” by Mark Sullivan

Book Cover

This book is historical fiction based on the story of 17-year-old Pino Lella, who was a true hero during the closing years of World War II. He bravely led many people, mostly Jews, out of Italy over the Alps into Switzerland, which remained neutral throughout the war. He then went on to become a spy for the Allies, as he worked as a driver for one of Hitler’s henchmen, and had to endure the scorn of his family and others, as he wore a Nazi uniform to carry out this role.  There is also a beautiful, but ill-fated, love story in the book. The protagonist of this story, Pino Lella, is still alive (as of the time of publication), and although he doesn’t consider himself a hero, he recounted his story for the author.
