“The First Conspiracy” by Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch

Book Cover

In an age of campaign finance fraud and Russian-sponsored election meddling, it was riveting to read about the little-known first conspiracy of American history: on the eve of the first battle of the Revolution, the British succeeded in turning colonists, soldiers and even members of George Washington’s personal guard over to the British cause. The plot even went as far as conspiring to kidnap or kill Washington. How the treason was discovered and pre-empted makes fascinating reading, and makes clear how important espionage and counterespionage has been throughout our history.
