Celebrating Black History Month in Huntington Town

January 31st, 2012

On Thursday, February 2nd, 2012, the Town of Huntington will hold a celebration of Black History Month.

In reality Black History occurs every day and should, therefore, be celebrated every day of the year, given that freedom and dignity can never be circumscribed within calendrical numbers. That being said, the Town of Huntington’s formal celebration will begin on February 2nd.

In honor of the occasion, the Town of Huntington is pleased to have Dr. Kevin D. Jordan as keynote speaker at an inspirational event at 7 p.m., in Huntington Town Hall. Dr. Kevin D. Jordan, Dean of Academic Support services at Dowling College, brings to this engagement a broad background of academic scholarship and extensive involvement in the contemporary Black experience.

JANUARY’S MOST INFAMOUS BIRTHDAY

January 17th, 2012

Everybody has a birthday. Both the Good and the Bad.

Just two days ago, on January 15th, our nation recalled the birth of one of this county’s most illustrious sons: Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who devoted his life, and ultimately sacrificed it, for the betterment of mankind. Long may his memory be honored and his devotion be emulated.

As for the Bad:

On this day, January 17th, one of our country’s most infamous men, Al Capone, was born in the year 1899 in Brooklyn, New York, to two hardworking immigrants from Naples, Italy, a barber and a seamstress.

* Project Feeder Watch and Project Nest Watch. If you like birds, you can help the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to collect valuable data. Visit  www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/ and watch.birds.cornell.edu/nest for more information.

*Horseshoe Crab Survey. Horseshoe crabs are a very significant species for scientific study. Help with their management and conservation by visiting Cornell’s site at www.nyhorseshoecrab.org.
