Suffolk County’s Mock Newbery Medal Winners
Next Monday is a very important day in the world of youth literature! On Monday, January 18th, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, will announce the winners of the 2010 Book & Media Awards. Included in these awards are the prestigious Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Medal. The Caldecott Medal honors the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children, while the Newbery Medal honors the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Every year, librarians in Suffolk County get together and participate in our own Mock Newbery wherein we read twelve of the best books of the past year and vote on which one we believe deserves the Newbery. All of these books were terrific reads, and even if they don’t win the Newbery Medal, it was a pleasure reading them.
Here is the list of tittles we examined:
- 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass
- Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared To Dream by Tanya Lee Stone
- Anything But Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin
- Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose
- Crossing Stones by Helen Frost
- The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
- The Magician’s Elephant by Kate DiCamillo
- Neil Armstrong Is My Uncle And Other Lies Muscle Man McGinty Told Me by Nan Marino
- A Season of Gifts by Richard Peck
- The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis by Barbara O’Connor
- When the Whistle Blows by Fran Cannon Slayton
- When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Anything But Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin was our Mock Newbery Medal winner, while The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly and When You Reach Me by Rebecca Steadwere our honor books.
Please check back on Monday, January 18th to discover who won each award.
