Great Websites for Kids

The World Wide Web is a big place. Unfathomably big. When it is our youngest of web surfers exploring this vast resource, many questions are raised. What websites are safe for children? What websites will captivate and educate them?

In response to those questions, the Association of Library Services to Children, a division of theĀ  American Library Association, created: Great Websites for Kids. This site separates websites into eight different basic categories: Animals, the Arts, History & Biography, Literature & Languages, Reference Desk, Mathematics & Computers, Sciences, and Social Sciences. Each of these categories are broken up again into several different sub categories. There is even a search feature that allows you to search for sites based on age level or keyword.

To be included on the Great Websites for Kids website, each website is evaluated for certain criteria: authorship (or sponsorship), purpose, design and stability, and content. While every website on the list does not have to meet all the criteria, the best websites out there do meet most of these requirements. You can even use the selection criteria listed when evaluated websites on your own.
